Air sparging is used to evaporate the contaminants from the groundwater (in-situ stripping) and introduce oxygen into the contaminated groundwater. This stimulates the natural and aerobic biodegradation processes. Sometimes, air sparging is also used in chemical oxidative projects. The compressed air enhances the oxidant distribution through the soil. Air sparging is sometimes referred to as compressed air injection.
