Chemical techniques

Home> Soil> Chemical techniques

In many situations, HMVT applies chemical techniques to tackle contaminations. Some chemical techniques, for example oxidation and reduction, are used to break down contaminations, whereas other chemical techniques are aimed at immobilising a contamination in the soil.

Chemical oxidation
A chemical technique that has proven itself more and more in recent years is chemical oxidation. Chemical oxidation gives excellent results within a short period of time. This technique is particularly effective and useful in core areas with high concentrations of contaminants. Depending on the local contamination situation, we apply the following chemical oxidation techniques:

  • Chemical oxidation using hydrogen peroxide (Fenton’s reagent).
  • Applying an advanced Fenton process.
  • Chemical oxidation using permanganate.
  • Chemical oxidation using activated persulphate.

Chemical reduction: FENNA
We also work with chemical reduction through injecting zero-valent iron nanoparticles. We combine this method with biological degradation via our FENNA concept.

Immobilisation
Not all forms of contamination are immediately suitable for remediation by extraction or through chemical or biological methods, for instance contamination from heavy metals. Immobilising (blocking) all or a part of a mobile contamination is also an option to prevent it from spreading to the air or to other parts in the soil. This will take away the risk of further contamination. We have been using immobilisation for various types of contamination situations by now.
